Everything is possible; however, anyone considering this avenue should know that it is not as easy as it looks. There are many factors in making adjustments to SPF equipment that play a big role in properly proportioning all chemicals to make sure they adhere and react correctly to avoid inspection failure. Even application of foam is a skill built by practice. If you are considering this route to save a few dollars, it may very well cost you much more in the end. We strongly recommend that you let a professional handle this job. You will get what you pay for. Doing it right the first time is the way to go.

If you are going to compare prices between installing spray foam insulation to installing fiberglass insulation it would be like comparing apples to oranges. In all reality of facts there is no comparison between the two because they are two very different products.

Why should anyone consider spray foam insulation vs. fiberglass insulation for their building or home?

  • For starters, the spray foam reaches and seals places that fiberglass, no matter how good of an installer you hire, just isn't capable of.
  • Research shows that spray foam offers long term durability that is greater than, or equal to the lifespan of a building itself.
  • Structural rigidity, moisture control, noise reduction are just few to mention.
  • The most intriguing reason why people turn to SPF is the savings it generates in energy cost. Low energy bills make a consumer a happy client, low energy usage makes our planet and ozone layer a better place to live.
  • Even the government recognizes and rewards those who put the effort into conserving energy.

  • Their main differences are in R-value per inch and their strength.

    • The Open-Cell is spray-applied low density SPF that weighs between 0.4 - 0.6 lbs per cubic ft when fully cured and reaches an R-value to about R-3.5 per inch. Open Cell is considered non-structural, semi-rigid/flexible SPF insulation that expands 100 - 150 times from its original volume. It also requires a vapor barrier.
    • The Closed Cell is spray-applied medium density SPF that weighs between 1.5 - 2 lbs per cubic ft when fully cured and reaches an R-value to about R-7.0 per inch. Closed Cell is considered structural, rigid SPF insulation with strength about 15 - 25 PSI and expands about 30 to 50 times from its original volume.

Aside from possessing great environmental benefits, both products provide excellent air and moisture barrier in buildings as well as insulation factors.

Want to learn more about R-values?
Here's a very informative article about The Myth Of Insulation Values. It's a fascinating look at why the R-value isn't always the most important factor in determining the effectiveness of your spray foam insulation installation!

Whether you are a builder, landlord, or a homeowner, at today's rates of heating fuel the least you can do is to grab the calculator and figure out how much money will you spend heating the outdoors this winter.

Spray Foam Types and their Costs
Open cell: $0.40 per inch per 1 sq. ft.
Closed cell: $1.00 per inch per 1 sq. ft.

Note: Prices may change without notice. This is only a guide for your project estimation convenience.

The use of 5" in the roof and 3" in the walls will satisfy BOCA code requirements. It is also advised to install a fresh air exchanger. We recommend looking up Aucella HVAC.

Spray Foam Polyurethane Foam also called SPF may be used in a variety of applications due to its multi-tasking abilities. The physical properties of this material can be formulated to many different uses and needs. Depending on the intended use of this material it can be applied to insulate or isolate.

Although, SPF has been around since the 1960s and mostly used in commercial and manufacturing projects, with the ongoing rising cost of heating fuel, it is becoming very popular by builders and homeowners.
